Audience Feedback

After receiving audience feedback from my preliminary task it opened my eyes to see how it could be improved. The good aspects of it were that there was a clear story which was well established through the costume and location. I was told the editing and transitions worked effectively. As we used the tripod, the use of camera was steady, upholding the verisimilitude. Ambient sound also worked in our favour because the rain complimented the crime genre- it produced an uneasy atmosphere. However composition was a large element which I fell down on. There were areas that I could have used sound effects and the music I used didn’t work well with the genre of crime because it was too comical. Jump cuts were also an issue as they were not as successful as they could have been and it didn’t convey the story well. I think I could have used more shot types such as shot-reverse-shot when Big Jim and Alcapone are in a conversation, as well as match on action when the characters move around the area.

Preliminary task

 

Our preliminary project consisted of creating a two minute sequence involving two people. The first character had to come in to a room and approach the other character, then both participants needed to have conversation. To do this successfully, we had to consider all elements of technique features including sound, mis-en-scene, camera and editing. The camera was quite easy to use which helped to ceate certain shot types eg. zoom ins, establishing shot, close up etc. I quite liked our outcome; I believe my own final piece told a story. The narrative was about gangster named Alcapone who was disappointed by his worker Big Jim which resulted in Big Jim being shot by his boss. We created the genre of crime partly through the use of props (mis- en- scene) - Big Jim was shot by a gun, close ups of Alcapone holding the gun are shown. Also, the setting contributed because one half was shot at a garage park. On the walls of the garages were there was graffiti and to add to the sinister atmosphere we shot while it was raining to give the feels of an unsafe environment. Overall I feel the whole collaboration of the shots in to a short piece was successful because they flowed in each scene. However, I think we could have used more cut-on-action editing to show our skill with the camera and editing software.
